And the profits will flow
In the introduction to Conscious Capitalism, the author John Mackey - and founder of Whole Foods Market - tells a story about the early days of Whole Foods Market. In short, after only a few months of trading, their first shop, in Austen Texas was flooded when a storm unexpectedly hit the city. All of their stock was lost. With no insurance and no plan b, it seemed like an early end to the Whole Foods venture.
But an unexpected thing happened. The following day, neighbours, customers and friends started to turn up at the store, with mops, buckets and a will to keep the shop open. 'How can we help'? they said. Four months later the shop did reopen.
If this is the outcome of truly living the purpose of your business, and caring about your staff, your customers, your neighbours, then as Julia Reboltz says, co-founder of the Performance Purpose Group says, 'profits will follow'.
Julia continues to summerise this beautifully:
“...if customers are glad that you exist and they wish to pay for your products, you can co-create with your suppliers and your employees walk through the door every morning glad to work for you, then profits will flow.
Putting people and purpose at the heart of business doesn't have to be at the expense profit. Profit is a consequence of treating the people you work with well, respecting your customers and engaging meaningfully with the communities affected by your work.

Organizations need oxygen in order to thrive and money is that oxygen so it's going to keep you awake at night but it's not going to be the reason you get up in the morning.
So for me it's about wholeness - and if your organization is truly living a purpose that serves the society where customers are glad that you exist and they wish to pay for your products you can co-create with your suppliers and your employees walk through the door every morning glad to work for you then profits will flow because money is a proxy for you doing that well and it really is a school card and an outcome
and but if you persue the outcome but not why you persue the outcome and the you know the means doesn't serve the ends and of itself.
